Army blocks disability paperwork aid at Fort Drum (this story is disturbing--the army ordered the VA at Fort Drum not to help disabled veterans with their paperwork because when the VA did so, the soldiers would end up qualifying for more benefits, and the army didn't want that!)
A New Post-Racial Politics
With the early success of Obama in some of the primaries, commentators like Daniel Schorr seem to be falling all over themselves to declare that racism is over and that discrimination based on race is not the stumbling block that it once was. Mr. Schorr, you might be surprised to know that a book has been written about you!

Obviously we are not living in a post-race or post-gender culture. Racism and sexism are too engrained in the structures of our land. Just look at what Clinton has to endure in the race. No one critiques the males for their styles or choice of clothes. And seldom is Obama's name mentioned without reference to race. Yet something has changed in the culture. Are we growing up, maturing? Their presence does suggest something, something that indicates that change has occurred. Has that change reached the systemic level? I doubt it. But we are living in interesting times, hopeful times, I would suggest.
